Il giorno 5 febbraio 2026 presso il DiSIA, in sala riunioni 205, alle 12.00, Ester Lazzari (Department of Demography, University of Vienna, & Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital, Vienna) terrà un seminario dal titolo: “The contribution of Assisted Reproductive Technologies to total fertility rates in 32 high-income countries

Abstract
Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have become increasingly important pathways to parenthood in high-income countries. Despite their growing significance, we lack systematic cross-national evidence on the extent to which ART shapes national fertility levels and on what drives variation across countries. In this talk, I present a novel demographic approach to quantifying and comparing ART’s contribution to fertility levels. Using harmonized age-specific data linking ART-conceived births to national birth records, I provide the first comparative assessment of ART-related total and age-specific fertility rates across 32 high-income countries. I then decompose cross-country differences in ART-specific fertility rates into two components: variation in underlying fertility patterns and variation in ART uptake among those who give birth. Finally, I explore whether differences in ART uptake correspond to cross-national variation in institutional support for assisted reproduction.
